The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday that NC State and Virginia would keep their previously scheduled 2026 date after moving the game to Charlottesville earlier in June.
The game, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, will remain in Week Zero after the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee approved a waiver for the date. ESPN will televise the contest, slated to kick off at 3:30 from Scott Stadium.
The waiver was necessary because the game was originally scheduled to be played in Brazil. NCAA rules allow games played in foreign countries to be played in Week Zero. The ACC has announced that this will be a conference contest.

Any word if UVA was able to claw back cancellation fees from the Brazil event? Apparently NC St was guaranteed 2 or 3mil while UVA had yet to actually sign the agreement for the event.
Originally, Virginia and NC State scheduled non-conference games for 2025 and 2026. The first game was played at NC State and the return was to be played at Virginia. The two teams were not scheduled to play conference games in these two years.
At some point after the Raleigh NC game, the ACC made this a conference game. Did the contract provide for this possibility? Will the return game be played in a later year when Virginia and NC State are not scheduled to play a conference game?
If not, it seems to me that NC State received a non-conference guarantee game against Virginia without having to pay the $1 million plus guarantee normally paid to schools for not playing the return.
There was nothing in the contract regarding switching the game to a conference contest. There was also no guarantee for either team.
