Maryland adds Rutgers & UCF to Future Football Schedules

The Maryland Terrapins have added games against Rutgers, UCF, and two FCS teams to their future football schedules, according to UM AD Kevin Anderson.

Rutgers will visit Byrd Stadium in College Park in 2014, while UCF will visit in 2016. Maryland will also host FCS teams James Madison and Howard in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

Maryland’s 2013 non-conference schedule is set with games at Connecticut on Sept. 14 and vs. West Virginia (at Baltimore) on Sept. 21. Two other games are scheduled but remain unannounced.

“We have both of them filled,” Anderson said. “We just don’t have the signed contracts right now.”

One of those games could be against the Temple Owls. Last year, the Owls published in their media guide that they were playing at Maryland on Sept. 7, 2013 and hosting the Terps on Sept. 20, 2014.

If the Temple series is still on the books, Maryland’s 2014 schedule is complete. The Terrapins need one more game in 2015 and 2016, but one of those spots could be filled by Notre Dame, who begins playing five ACC schools per season in 2014.

One thing that Anderson said Maryland likely won’t do is play a non-conference game against an ACC foe.

“Initially, I think we all sat down and talked about that,” Anderson said. “I think that could have been a strong possibility that we would have had to go to the other division and say ‘Hey, do you want to play and have it be nonconference?’ I can imagine some of my colleagues might be doing that.”

Updates:

  • Per Rutgers SID, the Scarlet Knights do not have a signed contract with Maryland yet. No other information will be released until then. So this could still be a home-and-home series.
  • Per UCF SID, the Knights will host Maryland in 2017, which makes it a home-and-home series (2016-17).
  • Tom Luicci (@tomluicci) of The Star-Ledger reports that Maryland will visit Rutgers in 2019, making it a home-and-home series.
