Tennessee football games in 2027 and 2028 have been shifted to earlier dates due to an NCAA rule change that takes effect next season.
Tennessee had previously been scheduled to host Georgia Tech on September 11, 2027, a matchup that is the second of a home-and-home series between the two teams. The Volunteers won the first meeting earlier this season in Atlanta, 45-24.
The second matchup has been moved up two weeks and will now be played on August 28, 2027, according to an announcement Wednesday.
In other non-conference action next season, Tennessee will host Tennessee State on Sept. 4 and Western Michigan on Sept 18. Dates for those two games remain unchanged.
Tennessee has also rescheduled its 2028 contest against West Virginia at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Previously slated for Sept. 2, the game will now be played one week earlier on August 26.
The date adjustments align with the NCAA’s June decision to adopt a uniform 14‑week regular season beginning in 2027. Under the new model, FBS programs may begin most seasons during what is currently known as Week Zero—the weekend before Labor Day—which will become the standard Week 1.
The Volunteers have also moved up the date of their home game against Chattanooga in 2028, shifting it forward two weeks from Sept. 16 to Sept. 2. Tennessee will also host Central Michigan on Sept. 9 as originally scheduled.
