The San Diego State Aztecs and the California Golden Bears have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2015 and 2016, SDSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk confirmed to the North County Times.
San Diego State will travel to face Cal at California Memorial Stadium in Berkley in 2015. The Aztecs will then host the Golden Bears at Qualcomm Stadium in 2016. Exact dates were not announced.
SDSU and Cal have met six times and the series is even at three games apiece. The two schools haven’t played since 1996.
The announcement gives San Diego State two non-conference games in 2015 and one in 2016. They are also slated to travel to San Jose State in 2015.
Cal’s schedules appear to be completed for both seasons. In 2015, the Bears travel to Texas and host Grambling State. Home games against Nevada and Texas are also on the books for 2016.
SDSU’s Sterk also confirmed a previously announced home-and-home series against Arizona State in 2016 and 2017. The series, which was set back in 2010, is currently slated for Sept. 9, 2017 in Tempe and Sept. 8, 2018 in San Diego.
Since the Aztecs are moving to the Big East in 2013, they are looking to schedule their non-conference games closer to home. Another one of those schools is UCLA, but they haven’t been able to settle on dates yet.
“I’m looking at what’s in our geographic region so we don’t have to travel for these because we’re going to do that a couple of times (a season) anyway,” Sterk said.
San Diego State also confirmed to the Times that they have canceled their 2013 game at Utah State. The Aztecs could possibly replace the Aggies with a game at Ohio State in 2013, but the school would not comment.
