The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have canceled a previously scheduled home-and-home football series with the UCLA Bruins, UCLA announced on Thursday.

According to a release, UCLA was notified of the cancellation last week via email and the Bruins “…offered to flip the order of the games in the series to keep the agreement intact, but Rutgers declined.”

Back in 2009, Rutgers and UCLA originally agreed to a home-and-home series for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Then in 2014, the series was pushed back to 2020 in Pasadena and 2021 in Piscataway.

Per a copy of the contract obtained by FBSchedules.com in December 2016, Rutgers will have to pay UCLA a $500,000 cancellation fee. If the Scarlet Knights would have canceled 24-months prior to the game or less, the fee would have been $1 million.

Rutgers is left with only a home-and-home series scheduled with Temple for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Scarlet Knights are scheduled to visit Philadelphia on Sept. 19, 2020 and host the Owls on Sept. 4, 2021.

UCLA is now down to one scheduled non-conference game in 2020 and two in 2021. The Bruins are slated to visit San Diego State in 2020 (Sept. 19) and host games in 2021 vs. LSU (Sept. 4) and Fresno State (Sept. 18).
