Ohio State could host the San Diego State Aztecs in 2013, according to a report by The Columbus Dispatch.
The Buckeyes have been searching for a non-conference game in 2013 to replace their Aug. 31 season-opener against Vanderbilt, which was recently canceled by the Commodores. San Diego State has apparently emerged as the most likely candidate.
Ohio State has been in talks with Buffalo to move their game, previously announced as Sept. 21, to the season-opener on Aug. 31. San Diego State would then be placed into the Sept. 21 slot or they could switch with Florida A&M (Sept. 7).
“There are discussions,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said. “But there are discussions with other people, too. I can’t confirm that anything is done.”
OSU’s Smith also said that the BYU Cougars were a target to replace Vanderbilt, but that the game “fell through.”
Regarding moving the Bulls game to the season-opener, Buffalo senior associate athletics director Allen Green said “There have been discussions, but nothing has been finalized. We’re still waiting for Ohio State.”
Although Buffalo has four non-conference games scheduled, including the Buckeyes, they have Aug. 31 open.
If San Diego State does agree to the Ohio State game, they will need to cancel or postpone one non-conference game in 2013. The Aztecs are currently slated to host Eastern Illinois and Oregon State and travel to Utah State and San Jose State. If the Ohio State game is set for Sept. 7, Utah State would be the victim.
Ohio State is the second high-profile team that San Diego State has had discussions with for a 2013 game. The Aztecs turned down a game against Alabama earlier this year according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
