Old Dominion, Virginia Tech schedule three-game football series

The Old Dominion Monarchs and the Virginia Tech Hokies have scheduled a 3-game football series, The Virginian-Pilot has reported.

Old Dominion will travel to face Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg on Sept. 24, 2016 and again on Sept. 7, 2019. On Sept. 8, 2018, the Hokies will visit Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium in Norfolk.

The 2016 game will be the first ever meeting between the two schools, while the 2018 game is the first scheduled home contest for ODU against an ACC opponent.

“There is no school in America other than Virginia Tech that we would do a 2-for-1 deal with,” ODU athletic director Wood Selig said. “This is the last 2-for-1 deal that I will do. But in this case, to have the opportunity to bring Virginia Tech to Norfolk, it was something we needed to take advantage of.”

“The fact that Virginia Tech is going to play Old Dominion on the road is a statement that will be heard by other FBS programs, that this must be a pretty good situation, they must run a good, clean program and we should look into competing against Old Dominion.”

Virginia Tech is the first non-conference game that ODU has scheduled in 2016 and 2018. The Monarchs also host Idaho in 2019.

The Hokies now have four games scheduled for 2016 (Wisconsin, East Carolina, Liberty, ODU), two in 2018 (East Carolina, at ODU), and three in 2019 (at East Carolina, Charlotte, ODU).

Old Dominion will play as an FCS Independent in 2013 and will become a member of the FBS in 2014 and will play a full C-USA schedule. In 2015, ODU will become an official member of C-USA and will be eligible to complete in the conference championship game and bowl games.
