The Oklahoma Sooners and Colorado State Rams have canceled their planned 2028 football matchup, FBSchedules.com has learned.
The two schools originally agreed to the contest in 2023, scheduling it for September 30, 2028, at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla. The contract included a $1.8 million guarantee for Colorado State and a $1 million penalty if the game was canceled for reasons other than mutual consent.
According to a letter obtained from Colorado State University and signed by the Director of Athletics of both institutions, the programs mutually agreed to “…terminate the contract and all of the provisions of that contract, including Compensation and Damages requirements.” The letter also states that any public announcement regarding the termination “will state it is by mutual consent.”
No reason was provided, but the cancelation is likely tied to the SEC’s move to a nine‑game conference schedule beginning this season. The change left Oklahoma overscheduled by one game in 2028, when the Sooners already have non‑conference matchups set against Temple, Missouri State, and Houston.
Oklahoma’s nine-game league slate in 2028 includes home tilts against Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Texas (in Dallas), with road contests at Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas A&M.
With Oklahoma removed from the slate, Colorado State now has one opening in its 2028 non‑conference schedule. The Rams are currently set to visit Arizona on Sept. 2 before hosting Sam Houston on Sept. 9 and Wyoming on Sept. 23.
