The Oklahoma Sooners at West Virginia Mountaineers football game has been canceled due to COVID-19, the Big 12 announced on Thursday.

The two schools were scheduled to meet at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, W.Va., on Saturday, Dec. 12. The game was canceled as “…WVU is shutting down its football operations for seven days” due to COVID-19 issues.

“Our intent is to get this spread under control as soon as possible for the health and safety of all involved,” WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. “We are beyond disappointed not to play our final home game of the season and honor our seniors, but we need to act now and reevaluate our situation after Dec. 17.”

West Virginia finishes the 2020 regular-season 5-4 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 action. The Mountaineers will now stand by to see if they are selected to play in a post-season bowl game.

Oklahoma completes their regular-season schedule 7-2 overall and 6-2 in Big 12 play. The Sooners are currently ranked 11th in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, Oklahoma will face the Iowa State Cyclones in the 2020 Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game will kickoff at 12:00pm ET with television coverage on ABC.
