The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Ohio State Buckeyes have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2022 and 2023, the schools announced today.
In the first game of the series, Notre Dame will travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 3, 2022. The Fighting Irish will host the second and final game on Sept. 23, 2023 at Notre Dame Stadium.
“I am excited we are able once again to bring these two programs together on the football field,” said Notre Dame vice president and athletics director Jack Swarbrick. “Football games between Notre Dame and Ohio State make great sense from a strength-of-schedule standpoint.”
Notre Dame and Ohio State last met in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona. The Buckeyes won that game 34-20 to take a 3-2 lead in the overall series.
“Any time you talk about Notre Dame and Ohio State meeting in a football game, that event automatically is going to have huge national significance,” said Irish head coach Brian Kelly.
With Notre Dame no longer playing Michigan on an annual basis, they now have the freedom to schedule other power five opponents. In June, the Irish added a home-and-home series with Georgia for 2017 and 2019.
The addition of Ohio State gives Notre Dame seven tentative opponents in 2022 and 2023. Five of those opponents each season are the required ACC schools.
The Buckeyes are currently scheduled to play at Texas in 2022 and host both Texas and Boston College in 2023. Adding Notre Dame makes those slates even tougher, so it’s possible we’ll see some changes in the future.
