New Mexico added a 2020 game with Mississippi State, as well as 2020 and 2023 games with UMass, the school announced Friday.
The 2020 contest at Mississippi State will be contested Sept. 5, 2020, one week before the Lobos travel to USC. UNM will receive a $1 million guarantee for the game. The Lobos and Bulldogs have never faced off on the gridiron.
To accommodate the Mississippi State game, the Lobos’ contest with Idaho State was moved to Aug. 29, 2020, which is Week Zero.
The UMass tilts will be a home-and-home series, with the Minutemen traveling to Albuquerque on Oct. 3, 2020. The Lobos will trek eastward to Amherst on Sept. 23, 2023. New Mexico and UMass will also tee it up for the first time against each other in the schools’ history with that 2020 contest.
The addition of Mississippi State and UMass to New Mexico’s 2020 schedule gives the them five non-conference games that season. The Lobos can play 13 games total in 2020 since they play at Hawaii. That, along with playing in Week Zero, is allowed under NCAA rules.
Bob Davie’s Lobos finished the 2018 season 3-9 (1-7 Mountain West).
