Nebraska and Oklahoma have agreed in principle to play a 2021-22 home-and-home football series, the Omaha World-Herald has reported.

The first game is expected to be played at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman in 2021 with the second game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln in 2022.

Although a contract has yet to be signed, both schools want the series to happen, Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne said.

The 2021 contest will mark the 50th anniversary of the “Game of the Century.” Nebraska, the defending national champions and ranked number one, defeated no. 2 Oklahoma 35-31 at Owen Field in Norman on Nov. 25, 1971.

Nebraska and Oklahoma have a long rivalry that dates back to 1912. The two schools met eight times between 2000 and 2010 and played each year from 1928 through 1997. The Sooners lead the overall series 45-38-3.

Discussions for a future series have been ongoing ever since Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten. In October 2010, Osborne said that they couldn’t make a decision on the games “…until we know if the Big Ten is going from eight conference games to nine.” The decision to keep an 8-game football schedule was announced by the Big Ten in July.
