Navy pushes back series vs. Marshall, cancels series vs. Minnesota

Navy has pushed back a football series with Marshall and canceled a series with Minnesota. Both moves are in preparation for the Midshipmen to join the Big East Conference.

Navy was previously scheduled to travel to Marshall on Sept. 3, 2016 and host the Thundering Herd on Oct. 13, 2018. The series will now take place at Annapolis in 2021 and in Huntington in 2022. The 2022 game will be the season opener for both schools (Sept. 3).

The Midshipmen have also canceled a 2019-2020 home-and-home series with Minnesota, Navy’s athletic department has confirmed. The two schools were set to meet in Minneapolis on Sept. 14, 2019 and in Annapolis on Sept. 19, 2020.

Both the Marshall and Minnesota moves are the most recent ones in Navy’s process to adjust their future football schedules for conference play. When the Middies join the Big East in 2015, they will only have four-non-conference games per season, and three of those games will be Army, Air Force, and Notre Dame.

Below is a summary of the future games Navy has canceled or postponed to date:

  • Iowa State, 2018-19, home-and-home series (canceled)
  • Marshall, 2016/2018, home-and-home series (postponed to 2021-22)
  • Minnesota, 2019-20, home-and-home series (canceled)
  • at Rice, 2014 (canceled)
  • South Alabama, 2015-16, 2nd half of 4-game series (canceled)
  • Toledo, 2015 (canceled)
  • UNLV, 2014-17, home-and-home series (canceled)

Navy still needs to cancel or postpone two games in 2017, with the likely targets being contests with Florida Atlantic, Syracuse, and/or UAB.
