The Minnesota Golden Gophers and the BYU Cougars have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2020 and 2025, the schools announced on Wednesday.
Minnesota will host BYU at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Sept. 26, 2020. The Golden Gophers will then travel to face the Cougars at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Sept. 20, 2025.
The 2020 game will be the first-ever meeting between Minnesota and BYU on the gridiron. For Minnesota, it’s also their third announced non-conference opponent for that season. The Gophers are also slated to host New Mexico State and Miami (OH).
BYU now has nine games scheduled for the 2020 season. In addition to Minnesota, BYU is slated to travel to Utah, Arizona State, Boise State, NIU, and Stanford.
Home games for BYU in 2020 include Michigan State, Utah State, and Missouri.
“We’re excited to announce this series with Minnesota,” BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe said. “We are always looking for opportunities to schedule storied football programs like Minnesota. It will be a great experience for our coaches, players and fans to visit Big Ten country and we look forward to hosting the Gophers at LaVell Edwards Stadium.”
Minnesota also announced today that they will travel to face Colorado at Folsom Field in Boulder on Sept. 18, 2021. The Gophers will then host the Buffaloes in Minneapolis on Sept. 17, 2022.
The Minnesota-Colorado series has been on the books as far back as 2012. We aren’t exactly sure why they included it in their announcement today.
