Furman will travel to face Michigan State at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing on Sept. 17, 2016. The two schools have never met in football.
“We’re pleased to add Michigan State to our 2016 football schedule and look forward to the challenge,” Furman director of athletics Dr. Gary Clark said.
Furman, located in Greenville, SC, is a member of the Southern Conference in the Football Championship Division. The Paladins have never faced a team from the Big Ten, but they did play Penn State back in 1958 when the Nittany Lions were an Independent.
The addition of Furman completes Michigan State’s 2016 football schedule. The Spartans open the 2016 season at Alabama on Sept. 3 and then host Eastern Michigan on Sept. 10. After facing Furman, Michigan State hosts Notre Dame on Sept. 24 to complete the non-conference portion of their schedule.
In Big Ten play, the Spartans will host Iowa, Ohio State, Nebraska, and Northwestern and will travel to face Michigan, Indiana, Penn State, and Minnesota.
