The Lamar Cardinals have announced their 2020 football schedule, which includes nine games against Southland Conference opponents.
Lamar opens the 2020 season at home at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont, Texas, against the Mississippi College Choctaws on Thursday, Sept. 3. The following week on Sept. 12, Lamar opens Southland Conference action when they host Incarnate Word.
“When you look at the Southland Conference, especially the past two seasons, it is quite obvious there is a lot of parity,” said first-year Lamar University head football coach Blane Morgan. “There have been different co-champions in the league the past two seasons. Obviously, you want to get to your first conference game healthy, but before we can even look at that game, we have our season opener against Mississippi College. This is going to be a very challenging schedule.”
Lamar’s first road contest of the season is scheduled for Sept. 19 at Stephen F. Austin. That’s followed by a trip to play Rice on Sept. 26, which is Lamar’s second and final non-conference game of the season.
The remaining games for Lamar in 2020 are all Southland Conference contests — vs. Southeastern Louisiana (Oct. 3), at Central Arkansas (Oct. 10), vs. Houston Baptist (Oct. 17), at Abilene Christian (Oct. 31), vs. Northwestern State (Nov. 7), vs. Sam Houston State (Nov. 14), and at McNeese (Nov. 21).
Lamar’s Homecoming game is scheduled for Nov. 7 against Northwestern State, while their only open date of the season is slated for Oct. 24.

Lamar finished the 2019 season 4-8 overall and 2-7 in Southland Conference action. It was the final season under head coach Mike Schultz, who compiled a 13-22 record in three seasons in Beaumont.
