Florida State to play at Pittsburgh on Labor Day

The Florida State Seminoles and the Pittsburgh Panthers will play on Labor Day night, WarChant.com has reported. An official announcement will be made by the ACC on Monday.

Earlier this month, FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher first revealed the possible Labor Day match-up with Pitt at the end of the Seminoles’ annual Signing Day “War Party” in Tallahassee.

The game, which will be played at Heinz Field on Monday, Sept. 2, will be the first meeting between the two schools as members of the same conference. Pittsburgh leads the overall series against Florida State 5-3.

Florida State was scheduled to open the season against Wofford at Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 31. That game has been canceled and the Seminoles will likely schedule another FCS team on a different date.

Pitt has also canceled their season-opener against the Villanova Wildcats, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. There is no word yet on who the Panthers will replace Villanova with, but the Tribune reports that Villanova will replace Pitt with another FBS opponent.

That means it will likely be from a pool of five teams. Western Kentucky has yet to announce their fifth and final non-conference game, while Army, Fresno State, San Diego State, and San Jose State could schedule an additional game since they each play at Hawaii in 2013.

A source also tells FBSchedules.com that Wofford, which was previously slated to play at Florida State, will play at Baylor in 2013. The Baylor Bears had a spot open up on their schedule earlier this week when SMU canceled.

A contract has not yet been signed for the Baylor-Wofford game, but an agreement is said to be in place. The Wofford athletic department declined to comment on the possible new match-up.

BCInterruption also reports on a possible scenario for Villanova to play Boston College and Pitt to gain a non-conference opponent:

One intriguing hypothetical includes the ACC and CAA brokering a deal to swap out BC’s season opening game against Stony Brook for fellow CAA member Villanova. The CAA’s newest member, Stony Brook, could go to Pittsburgh later in the year, while BC could host Villanova to open the season on August 31. Stony Brook and Pitt have a shared open date later in the year on October 19 based on Stony Brook’s 2013 schedule, which appears to be out before the comically delayed ACC schedule.
