The Florida State Seminoles and the Pittsburgh Panthers could play on Labor Day this season, the Orlando Sentinel has reported.
Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 2. The game would be played at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh and would likely be a prime-time game on national television.
FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher revealed the possible Monday matchup at the end of the Seminoles’ annual Signing Day “War Party” yesterday in Tallahassee. Senior associate athletics director Monk Bonasorte also confirmed the news to the Sentinel.
The Seminoles are currently scheduled to open the season against Wofford at Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 31. In order to play Pitt that weekend, the Noles would have to move the Wofford game. Wofford has yet to announce their 2013 schedule, so their open dates are unknown.
Pitt is slated to host Villanova on Aug. 31 in their season-opener. That game would also have to be moved, and the Orlando Sentinel reports that Sept. 14 may be the only open date that the Wildcats have.
If Pitt were to move Villanova to Sept. 14, that would alter the schedule of the New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos are currently scheduled to play at Pittsburgh on Sept. 14. New Mexico’s 2013 schedule also hasn’t been announced, but they have non-conference games set for Aug. 31 (UTSA), Sept. 7 (at UTEP), Sept. 14 (at Pitt), and Oct. 5 (New Mexico State).
Pittsburgh leads the overall series against Florida State 5-3. The two schools last met way back in 1983. Whenever FSU and Pitt do play in 2013, it will be their first matchup as members of the same conference.
