The East Carolina Pirates and the BYU Cougars have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2017 and 2018, the two schools announced this afternoon.
East Carolina will host BYU at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, NC during the 2017 season. In 2018, the Pirates will travel to face the Cougars at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, UT. Exact dates for the series are to be announced.
This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. BYU is entering its second season as an FBS Independent while East Carolina has competed in Conference USA since 2007.
Also in 2017, East Carolina hosts Virginia Tech and travels to West Virginia. In 2018, ECU will host West Virginia.
BYU is slated to host Boise State, Georgia Tech and Utah in 2017. The Cougars will travel to Boise State and Utah in 2018. The two games against Utah are contingent upon the schools agreeing to continue their yearly series.
“We’re excited about this series with East Carolina. It allows both schools to have a unique travel experience and play very good competition,” BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe said. “Our football team has never played in North Carolina, so I’m excited that BYU fans in that part of the country will have an opportunity to see our team play in person.”
“BYU’s national athletic profile and the beauty of the campus and surrounding area make both of these games ones that every Pirate will want to see — here in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium as well as at LaVell Edwards Stadium,” ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland said. “This series will provide first-class football and terrific sportsmanship for all Pirate and Cougar fans. This is a relationship that we would like to continue in the future, possibly with competitions in other sports.”
