BYU and Washington State have finalized a 2012-13 home-and-home football series, BYU announced yesterday. The two-game series was first reported back in October.
BYU will open the 2012 season against Washington State at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Sept. 1. The BYU Cougars will then travel to face the Washington State Cougars at Martin Stadium in 2013 on a date to be determined.
“We’re excited to finalize this series with Washington State,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “It fits well with our philosophy of scheduling regional games with quality opponents. It also gives our fans in the Northwest another opportunity to see our football team play live.”
BYU leads the all-time series against Washington State 2-1. BYU won the first meeting 38-36 in the 1981 Holiday Bowl. In 1989 and 1990, the schools split two games in Provo.
BYU was previously slated to travel to Georgia Tech on Sept. 1, 2012, but will now host Washington State. This is the second time that the 2012 game against Georgia Tech has been moved. The initial series announcement had BYU visiting Georgia Tech on Oct. 13, but a home game against Oregon State now occupies that date.
The 2012 game at BYU completes Washington State’s non-conference schedule. WSU also hosts Eastern Washington and travels to UNLV.
